Wappan Wool Project outcomes

Date

April 2023

Wappan is a collection of felted textiles designed to promote and show the benefits and versatility of wool.

Wappan is a created textiles collection through the employment of natural renewable fibre known as Australian merino wool from my farm.

Wappan combines this sheep wool with the wool of other animals like goats (mohair and cashmere), alpaca, and silk.
I am focused on drawing inspiration from history the of my farm that I grew up on and lands natural form in a sustainable way to grow connections to objects that will not be of disposable for people. to appreciate possessions more.

My theme is the land of my farm as well as the wool of the sheep inspired by all of the natural surroundings and colours.
Neutral earthy farm colours will provoke a feeling of pure organic, calmness. This is associated with disconnection and being outdoors.

Majority of This project is made from Merino raw wool other materials along side the wool include mesh, cheese cloth, alpaca wool and mohair. All these materials align with my sustainable practice.

Through the process of felting both wet and needle felting these artefacts were developed, they were manipulated through needle felting to create the fine details on a larger scale the work was wet felted.

As this project was a development of felting these artefacts were made in the last weeks of the project.
The outcomes were not planned until closer towards the end of the project. The wool started off be being carded to then being wet felted which naturally washed the grease out of the wool, Felt is a non-woven cloth that is produced by rubbing, condensing and pressing woolen fibers with hot water and soap.
Felt making is one of man’s first handicrafts, and the oldest way of making fabric. It started in Central-Asia and North-East Asia, as soon as human beings started to domesticate sheep. The first people made their tents, rugs and clothes from felt.

This collection demonstrates the versatility of wool and encourages conversation about the rise and innovation of wool as we move towards a more sustainable fashion/ textiles future.

I have added some portfolio picture of how I made my outcomes
